If you’re a runner or walker who loves trail half marathons, the Lochmara Half Marathon is one to add to your list. Held annually on the first weekend in November, this event combines breathtaking scenery, a welcoming atmosphere, and the perfect mix of challenge and reward.
Lochmara Half Marathon: A Trail Runner's Delight
A Course Like No Other
The adventure begins with a beautiful catamaran ride from Picton Wharf to the Anakiwa Outward Bound School. From there, a 3 km village loop spreads out participants before they enter the Queen Charlotte Track, where the real magic begins.
The course is beautifully scenic, with a gradual 9 km climb winding through lush bush tracks. As you crest the hill, you’re met with stunning sea and bush views that make this run truly very special. The descent is steady and rewarding, allowing you to soak in the natural beauty of Queen Charlotte Sound.

My 2024 Race Experience
After a Queenstown winter with minimal training—just five runs over four months—I set my sights on Lochmara to kickstart my running again. With over 40 years of running experience and literally hundreds of half marathons under my belt, including Pikes Peak in Colorado and five Kepler Challenges, I still get an unmistakable buzz standing on the start line. These days, though, I think of it less as lining up for a race and more for an outing.
This year, I was determined to beat my 2022 Lochmara time. The first half of the race felt fantastic; I was loving the trail, the views, and the challenge. But at 15.5 km, cramp struck, forcing me into a frustrating 3 km walk. Once the cramp eased, I plodded on to the finish line at Lochmara Lodge, grateful for the incredible setting despite the setback.
What I Wore
Running comfort and reliability were key, and my gear didn’t disappoint:
- Hoka Speedgoats: A supportive trail shoe with excellent cushioning—a must for old bones tackling challenging terrain!
- Icebreaker Multisport Light Mini Socks: Nicely padded and gentle on my feet, these socks kept me comfortable the whole way.
- Mons Merino Sports Bra: Perfect for running and easy to wear for a refreshing post-race swim.
- Icebreaker Merino T-Shirt: I only ever run in merino tops and bras. No chafing, just ultimate comfort.
Vintage Runners Lead the Way
As a 62-year-old runner, I feel fortunate to still be lacing up my shoes injury-free, with all my vintage body parts holding strong! The “Vintage Woman and Men” category is a standout feature of this event, celebrating runners who prove that age is no barrier to adventure. Watching the camaraderie and determination of everyone in this group was nothing short of inspiring.
Why Lochmara Is a Must-Run
This year marked the 10th anniversary of the Lochmara Half Marathon, a testament to Race Director Peter Yarrell’s dedication. Over the years, Peter has raised significant funds for charities through events like this and the Tour of NZ bike ride, adding an extra layer of meaning to an already exceptional race.
With entries capped at only around 200 participants, the Lochmara Half Marathon fills quickly when registration opens in July. If you’re looking for a trail race that offers challenge, beauty, and a sense of community, this one is hard to beat.
Back for More in 2025
Next year, I’ll return for my fifth Lochmara Half Marathon, ready to take on the trail and leave the cramps behind. It’s not just about the race—it’s about the joy of running in one of New Zealand’s most beautiful settings.
So, if you’re seeking an unforgettable running adventure, mark your calendar, lace up your shoes, and I’ll see you on the start line. Because truly, the buzz of race day never gets old!
