Birkenstock is a family business that was founded in Germany 250 years ago, and their iconic foot-hugging footbed is now over 100 years old – and if you’re thinking Birkenstock wrote the book on podiatry and healthy footwear you’d be right. ‘The Karl Birkenstock System’ was published in 1947 and still is a reference textbook for footwear professionals around the world. 

Every pair of Birkenstocks is still made in Germany and passes through around fifty human hands as the individual components are stretched, snipped, sculpted, smoothed, set, glued and, eventually, transformed into functional footwear. Making a Birkenstock is meticulous work, and it all begins with the footbed. This is made up of four layers of carefully selected natural materials – jute, cork, latex and suede – which are then molded into an anatomical form that took decades of development to perfect

Teva was created in 1984 by a rafting guide on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. He got fed up with his jandals floating away and added velcro straps to keep them on his feet – and just like that Teva was born!

Reef use what they call ‘thoughtful materials’ to make their footwear – cotton, jute, cork, wood, eco-foams, and responsibly sourced, low-impact ISA Lite, leather.
